Setting up a Dogl class

Dogl classes let you group students and quizzes together in a way that lets you keep track of student progress.

Creating a Dogl class

To create a class, navigate to Classes and click the Add new class button. Then you can enter:

  • Class name: The name used to identify your class, both for you and your students. Example: MATH 122 Calculus, Fall 2023.
  • Class dates: The approximate date range the class is running for. This is used to help keep things organized. It won't restrict your ability to run quizzes outside the class dates.
  • Textbook: The default textbook to set for students joining this class. If we don't currently have your specific textbook, you can just pick something similar, or arbitrarily.
  • Student registration: You can choose whether you want students to self-register for the class, or if you want to upload a CSV file with student details.

Student self-registration

With this option you don't need to upload any data. You just send out a special link to students that lets them register for the class using either their student ID or their email address.

Student CSV file

You can upload a CSV file containing a list of students, with a student ID or email address (or both) listed for each student. The system tries to autodetect the columns from the file, but you can manually specify them in the header row. Only the records with a checkmark next to them will be imported. Students can then join via a class-wide join link, or Dogl can send personalized links to the students.

Joining

Students can join a Dogl class in two ways:

You can copy a class-wide join link using a button on the class page. If someone visits this link on their mobile device, the Dogl app will open up and let them match up their Dogl profile with their student details. If the app isn't installed, the person will be prompted to install it.

The app will prompt the student for either their student ID or their email address. For a class with student self-registration, which identifier is asked for depends on what was specified when the class was created, and for a class created with a student CSV file, it depends on what was available in the CSV file.

If your class uses an uploaded student CSV file, and the file contains email addresses, then you can have Dogl send out an invitational email to each of those email addresses. The email contains instructions on how to get started, as well as a personalized link that the student can visit on their mobile device to automatically link their Dogl profile with their student details on your class.

This option can be accessed via the -button in the student administration view for the given class:
